Milan, 13 November 2025 – In Italy, 1 in 4 adults suffers from sleep disorders and 10-15% from chronic insomnia, but the problem is often underestimated or treated superficially. Yet, sleep deprivation alters nervous system functions, weakens immune defences, compromises metabolic and cardiovascular health, and worsens mood, concentration and social relationships.

From Michelangelo (Night) to Goya (The sleep of reasons produces monsters), from Munch (Sleepless Night) to Dali (Sleep), and up to contemporary works by Wall (Insomnia) and Bourgeois (Insomnia Drawings), the great artists of every era have depicted insomnia as a condition that affects emotional balance and psychological well-being. Today, science confirms that good sleep is an ally for health, prevention and social cohesion, and calls for recognizing and addressing insomnia without trivializing it.

These themes were the focus of the press conference “Ipnosis – Shedding light on the night”, held today in Milan. The event, promoted by Neopharmed Gentili, offered an experience through 15 artworks dedicated to insomnia, narrated by Sergio Risaliti, Artistic Director of the Museo Novecento in Florence, in a dialogue between art and science designed to spotlight sleep as an “invisible form of care”.

Insomnia may present as difficulty falling asleep, frequent nighttime awakenings, early morning awakening, or non-restorative sleep. When symptoms occur at least three nights per week and persist for over three months, the condition is defined as chronic insomnia.

To raise awareness of insomnia, the awareness campaign “Se vuoi essere sveglio, dormi” (If you want to be awake, sleep) is online, promoted by Neopharmed Gentili. The initiative brings together real experiences related to sleep disorders and expert advice to spread a new culture of sleep as an integral part of health. The campaign website www.sevuoiesseresvegliodormi.it provides a list of sleep centres in Italy, along with best practices and advice from specialists to promote restful sleep.
