Erectile dysfunction: raising awareness of the issue and patient-friendly therapeutic solutions aligned with male sexuality.

Milan, 28 September 2024 – Awareness about the issue of erectile dysfunction (ED) continues to grow within the male population, alongside the availability of new therapeutic formulations that simplify care, allowing us to fully satisfy the needs of patients. Among them is sildenafil, the first phosphodiesterase inhibitor to have been developed and a treatment that is at the forefront of combating DE, now also available in an innovative spray formulation, making it easy to use and ensuring a fast-acting and effective treatment.

These were the topics of discussion in the “Dalla compressa…al volatile” workshop, organized by the Italian Society of Andrology (SIA – Società Italiana di Andrologia) with an unconditional contribution by Neopharmed Gentili. At the center of the discussion was the importance of a holistic approach to treating patients with erectile dysfunction. This included selecting the most appropriate treatment based on individual needs, with a stronger emphasis on psychological factors, lifestyle considerations, and effective communication between the healthcare practitioner and the patient.

“Erectile dysfunction is the inability of the patient to initiate and bring to completion sexual intercourse in a manner satisfactory to them. It is estimated that 3 million Italians suffer from erectile dysfunction; however, due to lack of up-to-date information on this condition, we can reasonably posit that the number of men interested in this issue is higher”, states Dr. Alessandro Palmieri, president of the Italian Society of Andrology. “This disorder mainly affects men over their 40s, though in recent years we have observed a gradual decline in the age of onset as a result of increasingly stressful lifestyles, lack of a balanced diet, and other less than healthy habits. Additionally, the increased use of hormones such as testosterone, predominantly utilized by young men to favor the development of muscle mass, increases the possibility for this issue to manifest. It is crucial not to undermine the role of prevention of the risk factors and the importance of lifestyle choices in preventing the onset of this condition.”

Effective management of erectile dysfunction is impossible without a comprehensive understanding of its etiologies, given that it often manifests as a symptom of underlying, potentially severe conditions, including diabetes, neurological and cardiovascular disorders, and hormonal imbalances. In the oncology field, particular attention should be paid to patients undergoing surgery to treat pelvic tumors, as it is a common consequence of undergoing such procedures.

The key warning signs relating to erectile dysfunction include myocardial infarctions (heart attacks), but also vision conditions associated with cardiovascular problems, such as retinopathy and persistent headaches that induce vasodilation. These are all signals indicative of a physical change in erectile function and the body’s endothelial tissue, demanding immediate action, also as a means of preventing other more serious issues related to erectile dysfunction.

“In the event of suspicious symptoms, it would be best to consult an andrologist for an in-depth analysis of the problem, to obtain a prompt diagnosis, and to start a course of treatment that is both effective and tailored to the needs and expectations of the patient”, adds Dr. Palmieri. “From a therapeutic point of view, beyond the conventional oral treatments, nowadays we have extremely effective spray formulas at our disposal, with fast-acting mechanisms and undisputed efficacy for the patient. Pharmacological therapies paired with physical therapies, such as low-intensity shock wave therapy (LESWT) applied directly to the corpus cavernosum, allow for complete patient rehabilitation and potential gradual reduction of the treatment load.”

Lastly, experts stress that therapeutic education is fundamental in maximizing the efficacy of treatment. “The urologist is responsible for educating the patient on how to manage the treatment, convey the therapeutic goals of the treatment, and providing reassurance for potential adverse effects that may manifest, particularly in the initial phases of treatment, though they are negligible”, concludes Dr. Palmieri.
